Essentials of Humanities Research

Course Objective

Understanding and applying formal standards of communicating academic
research in both written and oral form; recognizing and applying
structures and patterns of argument appropriate to your field; designing
and delivering an effective oral research presentation aided by
Powerpoint; designing a poster and delivering a poster presentation;
writing a powerful conference abstract.

Course Content

After your Research Master, in all sorts of situations you will present
your research project. Here you work on improving and extending the
relevant skills for presenting a research project in a convincing,
well-argued manner for an educated, partly non-specialist audience, both
orally and in writing. Part of that concerns learning ‘interdisciplinary
communication,’ in particular also using visual tools to present your
research.

Teaching Methods

Seminar, 4 hours per week. Instruction on writing and oral presentation
skills in lectures; doing exercises in class; analyzing and exploring
conventions in your field and other preparation outside class.

Method of Assessment

Oral presentation 50%; written assignment 50%.

Entry Requirements

All participants should meet the entry requirements of the programme of
the Research Master Humanities or the Research Master Classics and
Ancient Civilizations.

Target Audience

This course is compulsory for all students of the Research Master
Humanities. Due to the entry requirements of the programme, the core
courses of the Research Master Humanities are only available for
students registered for the Research Master Humanities or the Research
Master Classics and Ancient Civilizations. Students of other Research
Master programmes or PhD students should seek approval from the
programme director.
