Course ObjectiveIn the course Proposal Writing students will learn how to write and
present a scientific research proposal while taking academic, commercial
and European research proposals into account. During the course, the
students will practise the structure of the proposal, the research
design and method, the planning and the budget. Not only will the
students receive a media training but also will they exercise how to
translate research results for non-scientific audiences. In addition,
the students will practise how to present a research proposal to an
audience or scientific committee.
Course ContentIn the first session, our students will practise the so-called Elevator
Pitch. They will receive information about the procedure and assessment
of NWO (Dutch Research Council) subsidy proposals and about the
importance of valorisation. As a first assignment the students will
comment on an existing research proposal and learn how to write an
abstract. The second assignment is dedicated to making a planning and
drafting a budget. As a third and fourth assignment the students will
write a press release and a "Kennislink" article respectively. As a
final assignment the students will write a scientific research proposal
on the basis of their thesis project. This proposal has to be written
according to the NWO application rules. During the last session of the
course each student will present his/her research proposal.
Teaching MethodsThere are weekly sessions of 90 minutes. Students actively participate
in these meetings.
