Multivariate Analysis (MSc)

This course is offered in Dutch. Some of the descriptions may therefore only be available in Dutch.

Course Objective

After following this course, the student should be able:
• to choose the correct statistical model in complex research designs,
• to analyse independently real data in Communication Science with the
use of the statistical program SPSS
• to analyse and interpret appropriate statistical models such as:

o linear regression in complex research designs such as mediation and
o Repeated Measures ANOVA
o Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA)

Course Content

Students get acquainted with advance statistical methods (regression and
experimental designs) for the purpose of analysing data in Communication
Science. We discuss mediation and moderation in the context of linear
regression as well as experimental methods i.e. Repeated Measures
ANOVA and MANOVA. This course focuses on the application of statistical
models in empirical research. In the lectures, the statistical methods
are discussed. In the tutorials, we analyse data (coming sometimes from
published articles in Communication Science) with SPSS. In the lectures,
we also discuss issues that have been introduced in the tutorials and
have been raised during data analysis. Students get the opportunity to
practice themselves with additional online assignments.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, SPSS tutorials and online exercises

Method of Assessment

Final exam (65%), SPSS-tests (20%) and theory tests (15%)
