Course Objective

Competences according to the General Educational framework Dentistry
2008 are: I (5), II (5), III (5), IV (5), V (5), VI (5), VII (5).
The student has
• In-depth knowledge and experience in assessing behavior problems and
apply behavior management techniques
• Knowledge of principles of biological psychology, cognitive psychology
and learning developmental and social psychology (e.g. theories of child
development, age and stages, life span development, person perception,
attitudes and social influences on behavior)
• Knowledge of psychological, ethical and philosophical aspects of the
dentist-patient relationship
• In-depth knowledge and experience in principles of communication
• Knowledge of psychology of pain (types of pain, structure of pain
perception, social and cultural influences of pain behaviour and
measuring pain)
• In-depth knowledge of basic priciples of local anesthesia, local and
general complications after administering local anesthetics, interaction
of local anesthetics with drugs
• Knowledge of basic principles, regulations, indications and
contra-indications of the use of (inhalation) sedation and general
anaesthesia in general paediatric practice
• In-depth knowledge and experience in administration of local
anesthetics to children both with regular devices and new technologies
(electronically driven)
• Experience in recognizing and treating local and general
complications, including allergic reactions, during and after
administering local anesthetics
• In-depth knowledge and experience in medical appraisal and risk
assessment (ASA) and reanimation techniques (adult and children)

Course Content

One of the corner stones of paediatric dentistry is to gain a profound
understanding of the development and perception of children. Within this
module, a fundamental basis will be created regarding the etiology and
treatment of (dental) anxiety in children. The students will be learned
how different children throughout various age groups/phases deal with
(anticipatory) anxiety and what the special rules and mechanisms are to
make contact with these children. The differences between anticipatory
anxiety, separation anxiety, state and trait anxiety are discussed as
well as the consequences of disruptive behavior, the need of making a
child feel safe and the value of basic conditioning, teaching and
learning, operant conditioning, aversive conditioning and the mechanisms
more or less directly related to those.

An important part of the treatment in paediatric dentistry is based on a
thorough knowledge of the techniques of behavioral management and its
consequences for the treatment of children. Attention is paid to age
related behaviour of the child, the role of the parents, different
styles of coping behaviour of the child and the interference between the
behavior of the dental staff and the behaviour of the child.

Sedation and general anesthesia
The use of sedation and anesthesia is a valuable appliance in paediatric
dentistry. All general dentists should be able to administer local
anesthesia in children. However, within this profile, basic principles
are refreshed and new devices of techniques are introduced and
Furthermore, basic principles of various levels of sedation are
discussed as well as the possibilities, indications, regulations and
implications of the use of (deep) sedation and general anesthesia in
paediatric practice.

Method of Assessment

Learning assessment
• Overall assessment of assignments and participation during the
seminars (grade: Good; Pass; or Fail)
• Presentation or paper (grade: 1-10)

• A prerequisite for grade registration (grade 1-10) is successful
completion of the seminar assignments. In case of a fail for one or more
of the seminar assignments and a pass for the presentation/paper, a 5.0
will be registered and students will need to retake the relevant seminar
