Esthetic Dentistry and Dental Anomalies

Course Objective

Competences according to the General Educational Framework Dentistry
2008 are: I (5), II (5), V d-h (5), VI (4), VII (5).
The student has
• in-depth knowledge upon various characteristics of dental restorative
materials used in paediatric dentistry including bonding and cleansing
(technical aspects, composition, indication, performance under various
conditions)
• experience in the use of various dental materials under various
conditions (both child and tooth-specific)
• in-depth knowledge and experience in indication and performing
preventive restorations, esthetic veneering, bonded bridges and splints,
esthetic restorations using adhesive systems
• in-depth knowledge and experience in juvenile prosthodontics
(including prosthetic replacement of primary anterior teeth)
• the capacity to examine, diagnose and treat disturbances in tooth
development induced by for example fluorosis, tetracyclins, amelogenesis
imperfect, dentinogenesis imperfecta
• the capacity to examine, diagnose and treat disturbances in tooth
morphology, number and eruption

Course Content

Despite the tendencies towards non-restorative caries treatment
procedures, restorative dentistry still takes a great place in
paediatric dental practice. All kinds of dental restorative strategies
and materials will be evaluated supported by evidence-based literature.
Attention will also be paid to several esthetic dental applications and
techniques.
Furthermore, normal tooth development and all sorts of dental anomalies
are discussed regarding etiology, epidemiology, diagnostic criteria,
treatment indications and treatment modalities.

Method of Assessment

Learning assessment
The student needs to pass all components undermentioned
• Overall assessment of assignments during the seminars (grade: Good;
Pass; or Fail)
• Final written exam at the end of the year (open case-based questions
and multiple choice) (grade: 1-10)

Grading
• A prerequisite for grade registration (grade 1-10) is successful
completion of the seminar assignments. In case of a fail for one or more
of the seminar assignments and a pass for the final exam, a 5.0 will be
registered and students will need to retake the relevant seminar
assignments.
