Course Objective

*The student will visit a medical specialist at work. He/she will never
carry out the medical procedure(s) himself, hence the level 3
indication.

The student
• knows, understands, summarizes, analyses, and evaluates the
definitions, epidemiology, diagnosis, etiology, consequences, treatment,
and prognosis of the most common dental sleep problems (notably sleep
bruxism, sleep-breathing disorders, and gastro-intestinal reflux
disorder).
• knows, understands, summarizes, analyses, and evaluates the
definitions, epidemiology, diagnosis, etiology, consequences, treatment,
and prognosis of those ENT problems that are associated with orofacial
pain.

Course Content

During this externship, the students will get acquainted with the
diagnostic and management procedures of a hospital-based laboratory for
sleep medicine (with a focus on conditions like sleep bruxism, sleep-
breathing disorders, and other sleep disorders that may have dental
implications, e.g., gastro-intestinal reflux disorder) and with those of
a hospital department for ear-nose-throat (ENT) problems (with a focus
on conditions that are associated with orofacial pain; Nederlandse
Vereniging van Hoofdpijnpatiënten, 2013). This externship will be
realized at the St. Lucas-Andreas Hospital (SLAZ) in Amsterdam, The
Netherlands.

• Grading from 1 to 10. Pass: 5.5 or higher.
