American Film: Cinematic Representations of the "Other"


Course Objective

Students become acquainted with the study of identity representation in
American film.

Course Content

What issues arise when studying the representation of identity – think
of race, gender, sexuality – in American film? Per meeting, we discuss a
particular issue – for instance, stereotyping, the male gaze, character
engagement, identity politics, queer subtext – after which students
apply their insights to an assigned filmic text.

Seminar meetings, 3 x 2 hours per week.

This module is part of three minor packages: (1) Schoolvakminor English

The level of English in this module is high.

Custom Course Registration

There is a slightly different enrollment procedure for this module. The standard procedure of the Faculty of Humanities has students sign up for (i) the module, (ii) the form of tuition (lecture and/or preferred seminar group), and (iii) the exam. However, for this module the instructor will assign the students to the seminar groups. Therefore, students should sign up for (i) the module and (iii) the exam, but not for (ii) the seminar groups.
