History Tutorial

Course Objective

Individual deepening of your expertise in one of the fields you have
studied in the other minor courses. Working on a topic tailored to the
student’s interest. Developing basic skills of historical research.

Course Content

Students take a tutorial on any topic of their own choice. They discuss
their ideas with the course coordinator and they agree on asking a
lecturer as a supervisor. Student and supervisor design a reading list
or a research proposal. The tutorial is finished with an oral exam and
or a paper that discusses the historiography or current state of the art
of the literature on the subject. Students are advised to check the
personal websites of the History staff members (research.vu.nl) to find
out more about a lecturer’s expertise and about what topics, themes and
projects a lecturer is involved in. Some staff-members may have room for
a student to join a project.

Self tuition by reading and writing under supervision of your teacher.
Several meetings should be scheduled by the lecturer and student.
