Religion in Antiquity

Course Objective

By attending the lectures and studying the mandatory literature
students
- get acquainted with the main points and issues of Religion in Ancient
Mesopotamia, Israel, and the Greco-Roman world;
-acquire a basic knowledge of the deities, religious life, rituals, and
customs in Mesopotamia, Ancient Israel and the Greco-Roman world;
- become acquainted with various theoretical approaches towards
religion;
- learn the often implicit theoretical assumptions in the scholarly
literature, and
- gain insight into the coherence between religious changes and other
developments in the studied societies.

Course Content

This course deals with the main points and issues of Religion in Ancient
Mesopotamia, Israel, and the Greco-Roman world. The lectures give an
overview of the deities, religious life, rituals, and customs in
Mesopotamia, Ancient Israel and the Greco-Roman world. In discussing the
various theoretical approaches towards religion, students will learn
the often implicit theoretical assumptions in the scholarly literature,
and gain insight into the coherence between religious changes and other
developments in the studied societies.

Second year students Oudheidwetenschappen.
The course is open as an elective for students from all disciplines.

Recommended background knowledge

A basic knowledge of the history of the Ancient World and its cultures
will greatly aid.
