Information Sciences

2022-2023
Everyone is online. As a result, organisations have more and more opportunities to generate and use data, which is exactly what students learn to do in the Bachelor in Information Sciences (IS). Students will be able to answer questions such as "How do you develop and implement a search engine, or a museum website that can predict what the visitor is interested in?". They will study new applications and markets, and create innovative and user-friendly solutions.

In the first year, students acquire basic IS skills, including the fundamental principles of programming. Furthermore, they receive an introduction to the main tracks of Information Sciences and Computer Science, which gives them a general idea of what this programme has to offer. Important courses include Introduction to IS, Web Technology, and Introduction to Programming. The first year is concluded by an Interactive Multimedia Project.

In the second year, students lay the foundations that are necessary for a successful transition to the professional field. The second year features several mandatory subjects, including Business Modelling and Requirements Engineering, Databases, and Software project Management.

In the third year, students start specialising by choosing a minor. For instance, they can choose the Data Science minor, the Information Sciences Minor or the Deep Programming minor. If these don't match their interests, they can also opt to create their own 'free' minor, or choose one from a different study programme, such as the minor in supervised by one of the researchers in the Department. The third year is concluded by an individual research project.
