The bachelor's degree in Media, Art, Design and Architecture (MKDA) is an interdisciplinary programme. We study the history, theory and functioning of media, art, design and architecture – each in its own right – but especially in their mutual interaction, because today's multimedia reality makes it increasingly harder to pigeonhole these disciplines. Much additional insight can be gained for the one who dares to look over the fence: we call that 1+1=3.
At Media we study film, television and the latest streaming platforms; Art is all about painting and drawing, graphics, sculpture and new media from 1400 onwards; Design focuses on graphic design, fashion history and domestic culture from 1750; and Architecture encompasses architecture, urban and spatial planning. At the same time, we broaden interdisciplinary approaches by continuously looking at where these disciplines meet and how they influence each other.
We begin by laying a foundation with historical overviews and exercises in analysing the form, operation and functioning of images, objects and spaces. In year two, you combine one of the four specialisations with a series of core subjects in which we look at media, art, design and architecture from the perspective of the museum ('exhibition machines'), the city ('urban culture') and international heritage. We conclude the year with an excursion abroad. After the free electives in year three (for further developing, broadening, internship and/or study abroad), you will follow research seminar, courses, in which we look back at our field and forward to the future and the professional field; finally, you demonstrate with a thesis that you are ready for work or further education.
