Business in Society (research) (joint degree)


The Research Master Business in Society is an excellent joint degree programme of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA) taught by the best researchers I business administration at both universities.

Business in Society focuses on understanding the intricate relationships between business and society, which becomes increasingly necessary for addressing grand challenges like environmental and financial sustainability and for meeting our society’s demand for ethical leadership and corporate social responsibility. The two-year programme will equip students with the knowledge and skills to shape new ways of doing business taking into account how organizations and society affect each other. It also provides the methodological and theory-building skills needed to conceive of new solutions for the problems related to business in society.

The exclusive programme provides students with an opportunity to work in close collaboration with top researchers from the School of Business and Economics (SBE) and the Amsterdam Business School (ABS). The aim of this joint effort is to educate a new generation of business and management researchers who have a profound grasp of the societal trends that are changing the face of business.

Graduating from this programme provides excellent prospects for continuing in a fully funded PhD position at one of our faculties.

Master Business in Society - First year Business in Society
The first year contains seven obligatory courses plus a research
internship. Additionally, two two specialization seminars must be

In the second year three courses, an interdisciplinary project, and a
thesis are obligatory. Additionally, you will follow three advanced
methods courses.
Second year Business in Society - Advanced Methods Course
During the second year you can select your own advanced
methods courses. The aim of the three courses, with a value of 6
EC each, is that you will specialize in a specific set of research
methods that fit your interests and field. You can select courses that
VU or UvA offer, but you can also take external courses at a research
master (MPhil) / PhD level. It is also possible to take a set of smaller
courses in combination and/or take courses that are offered at other
moments in time than the exact periods 1, 2 and 4. Send a timely request
with your selected courses, preferably as a set, to the examination
board, for approval.
Transitional arrangements
In the case of curriculum changes, a transitional arrangement applies to
higher year students who still have to take courses from the old
