History

The master’s degree in history at the VU trains you to become a professional historian. The course is broad-based and also allows you to specialise in a particular area of history. All students follow several basic subjects. In addition, you choose one of the specialisation programmes on offer: Global History and International Studies, Politiek en Soevereiniteit (partly taught in Dutch), Religion and Society, Medical and Health Humanities. Each specialisation offers a number of courses and tutorials and is based on one of the chairs of the History Department. A member of the academic staff personally mentors the progress of your study. Some specialisations are entirely in English; others are in Dutch, but with some lectures in English.
