Classics & Ancient Civilizations (research)

2025-2026

The two-year Research Master’s programme in Classics and Ancient Civilizations aims to prepare well-trained researchers who are capable of entering a PhD programme or who are able to function successfully in a research-oriented position outside of Academia. The field of study includes the languages, cultures and history of Western Europe, the Mediterranean area, and Western Asia in Antiquity.

The Research Master’s programme can best be characterised as “disciplinary in an interdisciplinary context”. Each of the two years of the programme starts with one or two interdisciplinary courses. In these interdisciplinary courses you will be trained to carry out thematic research from different angles working with various types of sources. All students also follow a module on research design and one on communicating research results. In addition you will follow specialisation courses and tutorials in the discipline of your choice, as well as a specialised course at one of the national Research Schools (60 EC in total).

In the first semester of the second year you can take your specialisation courses in Amsterdam or design a stay abroad. Finally, during the last semester students write their research master’s thesis.
