The MA Arts and Culture is characterised by a broad focus on various domains of the cultural sector. Here you will take courses in specialisations that are in line with developments in art, media, heritage, creative industry and design. While some specialisations place current affairs in a historical perspective, others deal explicitly with the contemporary context of art, culture and media. In our programmes you will learn more about history, theory, analysis, the many interrelationships, and you will become acquainted with the research of the staff, but also with research projects in all kinds of cultural institutions and companies. The city of Amsterdam - the cultural heart of the Netherlands - offers a unique breeding ground for linking academic depth to the expertise of professionals.
You have a choice of four specialisations. Three specialisations are entirely in English; the other one is in Dutch, with you also taking some courses in English:
- Comparative Arts and Media Studies
- Contemporary Art History
- Design Cultures
- Kunst, Markt en Connaisseurschap (Dutch)
Each graduation track consists of 60 credits. The programme for each specialisation consists of a compulsory part (30/36 ECTS, including a joint lecture series with all specialisations of 3 ECTS), electives (6/12 ECTS) and a thesis (18 ECTS). In the electives it is possible to follow the core courses from one of the other specialisations.
