Curating Art and Cultures

2026-2027

The Dual Master’s in Curating Art and Cultures is a unique, two-year programme offered jointly by the Vrije Universiteit, University of Amsterdam, and leading museums and cultural institutions in the Netherlands. The programme is designed to train the curators of the future. The Dual Master’s in Curating Art and Cultures responds to the growing demand for academically-grounded curatorial professionals with excellent (inter)disciplinary and theoretical backgrounds. In addition to developing your theoretical foundations, you will work as a curator in training during the year-long, curatorial internship at one of the programme’s partnering museums and cultural institutions.

The structure of Curating Art and Cultures broadly follows academic training in the first semester, then moves on to practical training during the second and third semesters, and closes with academic training in the fourth semester. The core courses Collecting, Curating and Display 1 and 2 (12 EC, 1 at UvA, 2 at VU) are followed in the first semester next to electives (18 EC), which shape the (inter)disciplinary specialization. The core courses Curatorial Practices in the Contemporary World 1 and 2 (12 EC, 1 at UvA, 2 at VU) are taught alongside the curatorial internship (60 EC) in the second and third semesters. The internship takes place from 1 February to 31 January the following year. In the fourth semester the ma-thesis (18 EC) completes the programme.
