Communication and Information Studies

If you want to be admitted to the Master's programme in Communication and Information Studies (CIS), but do not meet the prerequisites, you can first complete a pre-master's CIS. If you have vocational higher education (Dutch HBO-degree), it must be sufficiently compatible with the master's specialisation you have chosen (this requirement applies especially to the pre-master in CIS: Journalistiek, which requires demonstrable training in journalistic skills). The premaster takes a maximum of one year (and 30 credits; if your premaster programme comprises more than 30 EC, you will have to pay an extra fee per EC above 30). During that year, you will follow courses from the bachelor's programme in Communication and Information Studies.

Based on your previous education and specialisation you want to choose for, the admissions committee will determine your individual premaster programme. You can only start the premaster programme in September.

On the VU website, a number of pre-master variants are shown depending on your previous education and your desired advanced master's specialisation. This is only an indication; an individual programme is determined per student by the admissions committee.
