The aim of this course is to discuss in depth recent advances in planetary science in general, and geological/geochemical aspects of planetary science in particular.
Course Content
A series of lectures will examine in detail several key problems and active areas of research in planetary and exoplanetary science linked to specific space missions, specific rocky bodies in the solar system, and specific techniques (analytical, experimental or theoretical).
Additional Information Teaching Methods
The course will consist of several blocks of sessions concerning particular topics. Students will participate in flip the classroom sessions on specific subtopics, and in depth discussion of recent literature will form an integral part of the course. The course schedule will consist of lecture-based sessions and discussion sessions. The course counts for 6 EC = 160 SBU, which are divided between the different components of this course in the following way (1) 14 * 3 hour lectures / discussion sessions = 115 SBU, (2) Background reading and preparation of lecture = 36 SBU
Method of Assessment
The final mark for this course consists of the following components:
Written exam (35%),
presentation (20%),
exercises to be done during the course (40%).
Literature
Recent literature references will be provided during the course.Recommended background knowledge
Background in, or at least deep interest in, geology / geochemistry is required. The course builds upon the Introduction to Planetary Science course in the VU BSc Earth Sciences programme but it is possible to take the course without having done the Introduction to Planetary Science course.
