activities;

transformation of organizations;
• understand the demands that increasing e-business and online commerce
activity puts on the information systems landscape of the organization;

Course Content

Information systems and technology lie at the very heart of e-business
and online commerce. Among others, innovations in those technologies
have made it possible to conduct business over the Internet, streamline
interactions with suppliers, business partners, and customers, and
collect and analyze data from digital transactions. At the same time,
innovations in e-business activities often have to be supported by
technology.

This course focuses on this fundamental role of information systems in
e-business and online commerce. It provides an overview of the different
types of information systems and technologies that e-business and online
commerce organizations typically rely on, and discusses the way in which
they affect these organizations' e-business and online commerce
activities. Also covered are the demands that e-business and online
commerce activities put on the information systems used inside the
organization, for instance when it comes to managing the increasing
complexity of the information systems landscape, facilitating the
communication between different information systems, and managing
security of data and systems. Next to discussing these themes and issues
in (interactive) guest lectures, students will apply their knowledge of
the role of information systems and technology in e-business and online
commerce organizations through the analysis of a business case, which
involves the development of an e-business solution.
