Course Objective
After the component 'Study and Career':-students have an image of their options en preferences regarding a
minor, possible follow-up studies and the job market,
-students have reflected on the influence of these options and
preferences for their own future.
After the completion of the Project Applied Mathematics:
-students can independently study an advanced Mathematical topic,
-students must be able to present a clear and coherent written
presentation (similar to the format used in the bachelor project),
-students can give an interesting and clear oral presentation to fellow
students and lecturers.
Course Content
This course consists of two parts: five study and career sessions andthe Project Applied Mathematics.
During the study and career sessions the students acquaint with the job
market and the possibilities for further studies. This is done by
interviewing people from the work field, vacancy analysis, writing or
improving CVs, attending an Inhouse day, a SWOT analysis and by writing
a final reflection on all these activities.
During the Project Applied Mathematics students study a mathematical
topic in groups of two. They are guided by one of the lecturers of the
Mathematics Department, and have regular meetings with their supervisor.
Before the start of period 6, they choose a topic in consultation with
their fellow student and their supervisor (a list of possible topics is
provided). During period 6 they study the selected material, write a
thesis and give an oral presentation.
Teaching Methods
-tutorials Study and Career (5 sessions, one of which involves a visitto a company),
-Regular sessions with the supervisor and working on the project in
pairs,
-final project presentation.
Attendance of these activities is compulsory.
Method of Assessment
Study and Career: Active participation during sessions, oralpresentation and written report are required to complete the course.
Project Applied Mathematics: Academic attitude, oral presentation and
written report are graded, more information and assessment forms can be
found on canvas.
Due to the nature of this course, resits are not possible.

Students are expected to have finished a significant amount of secondyear courses, such that they have enough background knowledge for the
topic of their choice.
