Doel vak

Research Seminar Spatial Economics aims to:
• gain understanding of economic issues related to space, transport and
• be able to link theoretical knowledge to empirics and policy issues;
• be able to read scientific articles and to formulate critical
• be able to give a presentation based on a scientific article.

Inhoud vak

Research Seminar Spatial Economics introduces you into state-of the art
research on urban and regional topics. These topics include: (1)
Geography of Economic Development and Urbanization; (2) Multiple Market
and Government Failures in Urban Transport; (3) Economics of Sustainable
Development; (4) Economics of Energy & Climate Change (Fischer). The
course combines a series of lectures with student assignments.


Each week a senior researcher of the department of Spatial Economics
will introduce a certain topic by means of a lecture. At the of each
week, students will present their view on the topic, based on a selected
economic article that deals with the topic of that week. Non-presenting
students will act as discussants of the student presentations.


Final grade is based upon 1) Assignment on Geography of Economic
Development (20%), 2) Presentation of a scientific article (20%); 3)
Essay based on presentation (20%); 4) Contribution as discussant (10%);
5) Final Exam (30%). The minimum grade for the final exam should be at
least 5.0 to pass the course.

3th year bachelor students with an interest in economic geography,
social issues with a spatial dimension, the economics of urban and
transport issues, the economics of environment and global change.
