Inhoud vak

How do you get the most out of your research internship? How do you
elaborate your research idea into a clear, well-structured and effective
research proposal?
This course is designed to help you prepare most effectively for your
research internship. During this course you will write and present a
research proposal describing your future project. This is not only
useful for your future internship – learning how to write a successful
research proposal is an integral part of your academic career.

In this course you will take an active part in planning and structuring
your internship, supported by your internship supervisor(s) and course
lecturers. In the beginning of the course you will make a number of
appointments with your supervisor and will start working on your
research proposal at the same time as learning the necessary practical
skills for the internship. We have designed a number of assignments to
help you build your proposal step-by-step. By getting effective feedback
from your supervisor at each step you will make sure your proposal can
be later used for your experiments during your internship.
Parallel to working on the proposal you will receive an introductory
training in scientific writing in English. Here you will learn the basic
principles of reading and writing scientific literature: what is the
structure of a scientific article, how to write well-structured and
coherent paragraphs and sentences and what is appropriate punctuation,
grammar and vocabulary. You will apply these skills when writing your
own proposal.
At the end of the course you will give a short oral presentation of 5
minutes of your proposal.

Onderwijsvorm

The course starts with an introductory lecture. For the most part of the
course you will work together with your internship supervisor on
building the practical skills for the internship and working on the
research proposal. To support you in the writing of the proposal you
will have 5 work groups with a trainer in scientific writing in English
who will assess your assignments. Finally, we will close the course with
a presentation session where you will present your research proposal.

Toetsvorm

After completion of the course you will receive a “go/no go” assessment.
A “go” will allow you to proceed to your internship. This assessment
will be based on the following components of your performance:
1 Assessment of the written research proposal by the trainer in
scientific writing in English (pass/fail)
2 Assessment of the attitude, practical skills and the scientific
quality of the research proposal by the internship supervisor
(pass/fail)
3 Presentation (pass/fail)

Literatuur

Together with your internship supervisor you will select reviews and
primary research articles relevant for your future internship project.
Additionally, the course will assume that you have read and used the
bachelor programme’s guidelines for writing (and presenting).
