Doel vak

Overall aim
The student masters the methods for designing and conducting research to
a level that (s)he can critically appraise the methodological quality of
research in the field of health care and prevention.

Final attainment levels
The student:
. Is able to describe, explain, examine, identify, and assess the pros
and cons of, and methodological limiations (sources of biases) in
observational studies, experimental studies, systematic reviews and
. Is able to describe and explain the basic concepts in the field of
measurement in health sciences
. Is able to explain, examine, identify, and assess the methodological
limitations (sources of bias) in qualitative studies

Inhoud vak

This Master course Care & Prevention Research focuses on methods and
techniques of scientific studies related to both health care and
Topics to be covered:
• Advanced methodology of observational and experimental studies
• Systematic reviews and meta-analyses
• Critical appraisal of qualitative research
• Searching the literature; optimal use of Pubmed
• Measurement in health sciences and public health


The course comprises of lectures, as well as computer practicals
and seminar groups. Students will work in groups on
assignments. The lectures will contain examples applied to the field of
health care and prevention. The assignments are aimed at a better
understanding and an introduction to the application of the content of
the lectures.


Written exam (60% of total grade), an assignment on qualitative studies
(25% of total grade) and an assignment Internship Research Proposal (15%
of total grade). In addition, the Assignment Searching for Literature
will have to be completed successfully.

Students should have basic knowledge of statistics and epidemiology and
the principles and methods of observational studies and experimental

Students with a comparable BSc degree (such as Health Sciences at
another university, Human Movement Sciences etc.) should contact the
course coordinator Helma IJzelenberg ( before the
start of the course.

Overige informatie

The master course ’Care and Prevention Research’ is a compulsory course
in the specialisations ’Policy and Organisation of Health Care’,
‘Prevention and Public Health’, ’Infectious Diseases and Public Health’
and ’Nutrition and Health’. The course is open to all students within
the Master of Health Sciences.
