Inhoud vak

In this course students are made familiar with the main (inter)national
political and public debates regarding heritage management and practice.
Emphasis will be on the identification of different heritage categories
(tangible and intangible) and above all heritage paradigms, from
protectionist, conservationist traditions to the most recent
developmental approaches, focusing the contribution of heritage to
socio-economic and spatial development. Central concepts are: heritage,
landscape, value, authenticity, appropriation, public participation,
conflict, tourism. These will be illustrated and explained through a
series of case studies in seminar classes. In the course, particular
attention will be paid to the specific role of archaeological heritage
in the broader heritage discourse and frameworks.

Classes are being taught twice a week: 2 x 2 hrs.

Each week the first session will consist of a lecture (2 hrs) dealing
with a specific theme on a theoretical and practical level, creating an
overview of the theme. For each class, reading selected parts of the
handbook is compulsory
The second weekly session is a seminar. Students will address specific
case studies related to the theme of the lecture class, through specific
articles, presentations and site visits. As this course partly is a
preparation for the Excursion, these case studies will be related to the
archaeology of Sicily, which is this year’s excursion destination in the
same semester.

The handbook and lecture classes will be assessed by an exam at the end
of the course. This will consist of 50% of the grade.
The seminar classes on a specific topic will be assessed by weekly
assignments. Together, these assignments constitute 50% of the grade.
