Doel vak
After completing this course, students are able to:(1) identify, understand and explain key-developments in ethnographic,
historiographical
and legal studies of migration
(2) apply concepts and methodological tools to analyze migration in a
variety of academic
disciplines and scholarly genres, i.e. ethnography, historiography and
legal study
(3) evaluate contemporary interdisciplinary approaches and position
themselves within
key-debates
Inhoud vak
In this advanced course, students read and discuss recentkey-contributions in the study
of migration. During this intensive course, students learn to approach
migration as an
object of study from various disciplinary approaches and angles. To what
extent do
migration historians rely on conceptual insights from the social
sciences? How does an
ethnographer analyze cross-border interactions? And in what ways could a
legal scholar
benefit from a an anthropological approach? Special attention is given
to recent
developments in the field, i.e. diaspora studies, refugee studies and
postcolonial studies.
Students participate in weekly expert seminars on the study of
migration, with a migration
historian, an ethnographer and a legal scholar. These are aimed at
developing students’
reading, analytical and general research skills. Students learn how to
assess key-studies in
migration studies by writing three academic reviews and by discussing
their findings with
fellow students and an expert in the field. Finally, students write a
paper in which they reflect
on what they have learnt about the interdisciplinary approaches
addressed in
the seminars, and position themselves within key-debates.
