Doel vak

Learning objectives for the global health course:
1. identify the influence of urbanization, climate change, aging,
reduced poverty, increased mobility and migration, emerging patterns of
disease and new technologies on health and healthcare in different parts
of the world. The student is able to apply this knowledge in case
studies of low- and middle-income countries and emerging economies
2. discuss and explain issues related to interventions regarding
childhood disease and maternal and female health
3. describe and discuss the sustainable development goals related to
health; issues surrounding communicable and non-communicable diseases
(the global burden of disease) related to international policy and
practice in response to global changes. They can discuss the influence
of different healthcare and water systems on the health of a population
4. discuss and explain the presence and difference of healthcare
systems, water systems and environment for a healthy population
5. know how and when to apply the qualitative research method, can apply
several qualitative research methods and can analyze qualitative data;
6. develop and present a qualitative research proposal that meets the
criteria of scientific research; is able to formulate a research
question based on literature and can critically analyze publications

Learning Objectives for the 8-week program in Indonesia:
1. conduct a piece of scientific research based on an already written
research proposal
2. present research results (via a poster and oral presentation)
3. observe medical practice in a hospital in Indonesia (internal
medicine, mental health, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics,
pulmonology & respiratory medicine, community medicine)
4. discuss and explain current healthcare issues in Indonesia, including
the healthcare system in Indonesia from community to district level;
global health issues; specific specialty issues, from the fields of
internal medicine, mental health, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics,
pulmonology and respiratory medicine, and community medicine

Inhoud vak

This module introduces recent developments and practices within the
field of global health and global health research to examine the
healthcare system of Indonesia from a variety of perspectives (e.g.,
psychological, societal, managerial, political and economic).

In this module, students acquire experience in research and research
practices in developing countries (low and middle-income countries) with
regard to health care and culture. They will also gain insight into the
practice of health care in Indonesia, from the health center to hospital
and outpatient clinic. The course places a strong emphasis on community
health issues outside the hospital and to disease prevention.

Courses:
Course 1. Global health (1 month)
Course 2. A program based in Indonesia, in collaboration with the Gadjah
Mada University in Yogyakarta (Universitas Gadjah Mada, UGM) (2 months)

The course “global health” covers a broad spectrum of topics from a
global perspective. The course focuses on low- and middle-income
countries with a high burden of disease. People live in resource-poor
settings, with weak healthcare systems. This demands specific strategies
to prevent illness and effectively deal with problems like childhood
diseases, malnutrition, and obstetric/ maternal issues.
After this course, students participate in a further 2-month program in
Indonesia. The Indonesia program consists of one month in Yogyakarta and
one month in the field. The program in Yogyakarta consists of lectures,
case studies, ward rounds and observations in hospital and outpatient
clinic visits. Furthermore, students carry out a research project
concerning a demand-driven topic. In this way, students obtain a better
insight into the day-to-day world of this culturally diverse patient
group. The topics that can be chosen from include water and sanitation
(WASH), TB/HIV, mother and child care, lifestyle (prevention), tropical
diseases (malaria/dengue), and dermatology.

Structure of the module
The Global Health Indonesia module lasts a total of 12 weeks (18 ECTS).
For the first 4 weeks (6 ECTS) of the module, the students follow the
course “global health” (October).
Next, the students travel to Indonesia for an 8-week program (12 ECTS
(November / December).

Course 1: Global health
Contents
This course offers lectures from researchers and global health
practitioners from various scientific backgrounds, such as clinical
(medical practitioners), public health, epidemiology, social sciences,
medical anthropology and biomedical sciences. The lectures cover global
health from the perspective of the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), notably: good health and wellbeing (SDG 3),
gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls (SDG 5), clean
water and sanitation (SDG 6) and responsible consumption and production
(SDG 12). Topics covered include: healthcare systems, blindness,
malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy, childhood diseases, gender and health,
nutrition, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV and AIDS, safe motherhood,
mental health, disability, female genital mutilation, water and
sanitation, tropical medicine, neglected diseases, essential surgical
care, environment and health, access to medicine, and female cancer.
Lectures present interactive case studies to give students a better
understanding of the interaction between theory and practice in a global
health context.
In conjunction with the lectures, 7 tutorials will run to deepen
students’ knowledge of qualitative research methods. The focus of the
tutorials is on qualitative research methods, for example, “Photovoice”
and “Lifelines.” Over the course of the tutorials, students write a
research proposal. For participants of the Global Health Indonesia
module, predefined topics are available based on the demands from
participating community health centers (Pusat Kesehatan Masyarakat -
Puskesmas), in consultation with UGM.

Course 2: Indonesia program
Contents
Immediately following the completion of the global health module,
students travel to Indonesia to complete a program consisting of 8 weeks
of activities, including lectures, case studies, and hospital visits,
where students will observe patients during the ward rounds. Students
are not allowed to perform any clinical procedures. Furthermore, each
student will undertake a research assignment. The lectures and case
studies concern internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics &
gynecology in relation to tropical medicine and infectious diseases as
the primary problems in Indonesia, including their epidemiology,
diagnosis, and management. Aside from infectious diseases,
non-communicable diseases in the context of developing countries are
covered. During the ward and community health center visits, students
observe the Indonesian health system in practice and the basic concepts
of community medicine.
As detailed above, research proposals are already written in the
Netherlands during the global health course. Students visit a Puskesmas
(government-mandated health clinic) to obtain basic research information
and data. Furthermore, they travel to the communities surrounding the
Puskesmas as part of their fieldwork, to conduct interviews. In this
way, students are able to execute a research project and implement it as
a group working with district health management teams. In the field,
students will work together with Indonesian and international students.

Examination of the global health course consists of the following
elements:

• A research proposal, presented by the student (this is also used as a
selection criteria for the Indonesia program): grade > 6.0
• A final examination (open questions - CAT): grade > 6.0

The course grading provides 33% of the overall module grade.


Examination of the Indonesia program consists of 3 elements:
● Summer course group poster assignment
o Graded insufficient/ sufficient / good

● Healthcare system assignment consisting of 2 parts
o Part 1 – Patient interview in local health center
o Part 2 – Patient interview in hospital/outpatient clinic
o
This paper will constitute 30% of the total grade of the Indonesia
program.

● The research project will comprise the final grading of the 8-week
program in Indonesia:
o Research process / practical work 30%
o Research report 50%
o Research presentation 20%

This research project forms 70% of the total grade for the Indonesia
program.
The minimum grade for the Indonesian program is an average of 6.0.
The examination of the program in Indonesia constitutes 67% of the
overall module grade.
The research grading provides 67% of the overall module grade.
Important: Please be aware that in the case that you do not pass an
exam, you will NOT be automatically registered for a re-examination, and
will need to do this yourself. In order to sign up to resit an
examination, you will need to apply no later than 2 weeks before the
re-examination through the form “Re-take Exam Bachelor of Medicine.” .

Literatuur

An overview of the study material for the global health course will be
placed on CANVAS. For the Global Health Indonesia module, the literature
will be provided in collaboration with UGM.

Doelgroep

Target group for this Minor module Global Health Indonesia are 3rd year
Bachelor students from VUmc.

Overige informatie

Number of students
There are a limited number of places (20) for the module “Global Health
Indonesia.” The application procedure for this module is selective, and
selection will be based on an assignment, motivation, and grades.

Practical information
When selected for the Global Health Indonesia module, the costs of the
tuition fee at UGM will be covered by VUmc, but flight tickets,
accommodation, insurance and living costs will be at your own expense.
You will also be asked to make a financial contribution to the Bahasa
Indonesia language course (VUmc/IOO will partly sponsor this course).

Afwijkende intekenprocedure

Before the start of the semester, students will be invited to select their preferred minor track. However, the Institute of Education and Training (IET) will make a final selection based on both student preferences and availability in the different tracks. Once you have been selected for a track, the IET will make sure you’re registered for all educational activities such as study groups, courses, and exams.
