Current Sustainable Energy Technologies

Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.

Doel vak

This course is about asking the right questions and obtaining reliable
answers on everything related to energy usage and renewable energy
resources. You should be able to explain the basic features of these
technologies and should also be able to make quantitative predictions
for each of these technologies. After the course, you are expected to
have a complete overview of the technical, economic and societal
feasibilities of all possible forms of sustainable energy, including
relevance and positive and negative effects.

Inhoud vak

The course is divided into two parts. The first part (roughly the first
two weeks of the course) covers Part I of MacKay, the second part
(roughly the last two weeks of the course) covers Part II of MacKay.
Before the course starts: you should read the book of MacKay, in
particular Parts I and II, as well as a few papers announced on Canvas.

In week 1 you will formulate in total eight questions of Part I of
MacKay (Ch 3-18). You start to work out two of those by preparing a
hypothetical answer with detailed calculations. The hypothetical answers
should contain well-argued estimates. All questions must be relevant and
realistic and will as such be evaluated. In an interactive meeting you
will receive feedback from fellow students and a course lecturer on your
questions and answers. In week 2, you work out one of the questions
without answer from a fellow student. Also this work is discussed at an
interactive meeting. Towards the end of week 2 you will review the work
of another student, and after the feedback on your work is received, you
take the comments into account and prepare the final version of your

In weeks 3 and 4 you will do the same, but then based on Part II of
MacKay (Ch 19-31).

- Lecture
- Self-study

The results of Part I and Part II each constitute 50% of the grade.
Within each part the relevance and originality of the eight initial
questions form 25% of the mark for this part, the way each of three
questions is worked out forms 25% per question. The marks of Parts I and
II will be given by different lecturers and both marks (combined with
those of the feedback of the part involved, see below) need to be at
least 5.5. Read carefully the explanations in the template, which
contains aspects that will be taken into account for grading.

The quality of your feedback on questions from fellow students will
result in +0.25 points, -0.25 points or zero points added to the final
mark of the course for both Part I and Part II.
