Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.

Doel vak

-Recognize, interpret and understand the mechanisms contributing to
normal and pathological immune responses;
-Reproducing processes related to the development and functioning of
immune cells which are involved in ‘innate immunity’ and ‘adaptive
-Formulate, calculate and apply immunological methods; recognize and
demonstrate specific immune cells
-Identify disturbed immunological processes in diseases, like cancer,
autoimmunity, infectious diseases, allergy and inflammatory diseases of
the gut.
-Reproducing molecular processes that are basic to targeted cancer
-Describe applied immunological research and formulate questions on that
-Extract details from the literature; present and discuss these topics
and formulate the essence

A student is able to:

-Describe the difference between the cells involved in immunological
protection after an infection or vaccination;
-Describe basic cellular and molecular concepts involved in the innate
and adaptive immunity (antigen recognition, development of receptors,
complete immune response f.i. in an infection);
-Distinguish humoral and cellular responses that establish antigen
specific immune responses;
-Explain how the lymphoid system (tissues and organs) are involved in
antigen specific immune responses;
-Explain how tolerance (self) and immune response (non self) is achieved
in immunology;
-Distract from an experimental set-up which different celltypes have
different immune function;
-Understand the main literature issues discussed in the studygroups, and
familiarize details on the molecular concepts involved;
-Describe disturbed immunological processes that lead to a various
diseases and how to restore these.

Inhoud vak

-The basic course Immunology discusses the innate and adaptive immune
response. Both cellular and molecular interactions that play a
fundamental role in the ‘healthy’ steady-state immune system will be
-The dysregulation of the immune responses that lead to diseases such as
auto-immunity, cancer, chronic inflammatory diseases of the gut, allergy
and infectious diseases will be discussed;

-Lectures, that include details on the immunological immune responses
and research methods are highlighted. Also new applications that lead to
new interventions based on todays research will be discussed (24 h.);
-Studygroups, for which assignments are made in advance using literature
and the given lectures, take place in small groups with a high degree of
individual interaction. A digital educational program is used in the
classroom. The assignment and questions raised will be discussed
together (appr. 4 h.) Working groups themes are : Antigen
presentation/Vaccination and Antibodies
-Digital practical class, in which the structure of lymphoid organs and
immunological and histological techniques are treated (appr. 2 h.);
-In two laboratory classes immunological techniques are studied and
experimentally performed (8 h.): ELISA (4 h.) and Phagocytosis (4 h.)
-A poster presentation during which students make a poster and
present-discus a poster, using literature. There a three themes to
choose (4 h.)

-Lectures: 24 h.
-Studygroups: 4 h.
-Practical classes: 8 h
-Poster presentation: 4 h.

The exam (90%): digital exam which consists of Multiple Choice-questions
based on the literature, lectures, studygroups, the digital practical
class and experimental practical classes
Poster presentation (10%)

A minimum score of 5.50 for the written exam and the poster presentation
is required in order to pass.
