Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.
Doel vakBy the end of the course the student should be able:
1. to select the appropriate field measurement methods and techniques to
measure hydrological processes and their values for society;
2. to implement the methods and techniques, including equipment
3. to analyse, evaluate and interpret the results, using computer models
and statistical methods;
Students from the MSc Hydrology should be able:
4. to carry out the final integrating fieldwork in Luxemburg and MSc
thesis research projects independently.
Inhoud vakThe objective of this course is to familiarize students with measurement
methods and techniques from different disciplines, that are commonly
used in hydrology and related environmental sciences. The course is
organised around 2 modules, which are taught interlinked over a period
of four weeks.
Module 1 focuses on measuring techniques to understand and quantify the
basic hydrological processes, such as
measuring discharge, rainfall, soil properties and waterchemistry.
Module 2 focuses on techniques to measure the economic value of
hydrological processes (e.g. water availability and quality) or the
economic impacts of extreme events such as floods. Students will learn
how to design, conduct, and statistical analyse a survey to quantify
During the first two weeks of the course, lectures and practicals are
given at the VU. After these first two weeks, there is a one-week
fieldwork in the area of the Dinkel river in Twente. During the
fieldwork the students will be taught how to apply measurement
techniques in the field. Back at VU, there is time to analyse the
measurements taken in the field and to prepare the final presentation.
OnderwijsvormLectures, practicals, field practical, presentations
Toetsvorm- Assignments related to the practicals
- Participation during field practical and presentations in the field
- Final presentation at VU
LiteratuurLiteratue will be provided on Canvas.
DoelgroepThis course is compulsory for MSc Hydrology students. Students from
other relevant MSc programs are allowed to join, but it is recommend to
coordinate this with the teacher.
Overige informatieThe field course brings additional costs for the students, This is
partly subsidized by the faculty, but the students are obliged to pay
for part of the costs (travel, breakfast, lunch). Details on the exact
amount and how this can be paid will be shared during class.
Aanbevolen voorkennisIt is recommend that students have a some general knowledge of
hydrological processes. In addition to the field measurements, students
will use GIS, Python and R for data analysis.
