Doel vak

- Understand and analyse theories, concepts and working principles of
science communication and (exhibit) design in the context of science
museums.
- Synthesise ideas for an exhibit on the basis of theories, concepts and
working principles of science communication and (exhibit) design.
- Create and conduct a qualitative user research in a science museum
that meaningfully furthers an exhibit concept.
- Visually and textually present analysis and (user) research-grounded
exhibit design processes and outcomes.
- Reflect on working in an interdisciplinary team on an exhibit design
(process and outcome) for an external commissioner.

Inhoud vak

This course is about designing an exhibit for a science museum. You will
get familiar with theories of science communication in museum settings
and different approaches to exhibit design & development, science
communication in museum contexts, and user research.
Lecturers give insight into the role and work of (1) science
communicators in museums, (2) research(ers) in the field of science
museology, and (3) professionals in informal science & technology
learning environments.
Through individual and group assignments you are encouraged to combine
theory and practice, working step-by-step towards an exhibit design. The
design assignment is commissioned by a science museum, such as NEMO,
Museon, Naturalis, Delft Science Centre, or Artis.

Toetsvorm

Group assignments (45%), final presentation (15%), and individual
assessment(s) (40%). For all assignments and assessments a pass-grade
must be obtained.

Vereiste voorkennis

It is possible to follow the course as an elective course outside of one
of the science communication master specialisations of the Science
Faculty. In that case, additional reading may be asked from students,
depending on the student's educational background.

Academic articles. Direct links to articles will be provided on Canvas
before the beginning of the course.

Doelgroep

Optional course in the Science Communication master specialisation of
most of the two-year master programs of the Faculty of Science. Master
students from other universities in any scientific field are welcome as
well. Additional reading may be required.

This course contains guest lecture(s) from and (an) excursion(s) to a
science museum.

Aanbevolen voorkennis

We recommend to follow this course, at least, after having done the
course Science & Communication. We ask non-SC students to read Van Dam,
F., De Bakker, L, & Dijkstra, A.M. (2014). Wetenschapscommunicatie, een
kennisbasis. Boom Lemma uitgevers. ISBN: 978-94-6236-424-0. Chapters: 1,
2, 3, 4, 5 en 6. For English introduction literature, please contact the
