Doel vak

Upon completion of this course, students are able to:
• Discuss the main problems arising in supply chain network design and
redesign;
• Analyze an existing supply chain network, and assess its performance;
• Apply quantitative tools to design a supply chain network;
• Implement mathematical models to design and redesign supply chain
networks;
• Support managerial recommendations to optimize supply chain networks.

Inhoud vak

In today’s global supply chains, it is of paramount importance to be
able to strategically analyze, assess, and optimize supply chain
networks by using quantitative support tools. Fundamental decisions to
make include (a) selecting the right number, the locations, and the size
of production facilities, (b) determining the territory of each
facility, (c) deciding where each product show be produced, and (d)
determining the product flows through the supply chain.

In this course, we study how to design and redesign business networks in
logistics and supply chains by using mathematical techniques. We
investigate a variety of topics in a practical setting where we solve
real-life case studies. In particular, we aim at exploring the following
topics:
• The value of supply chain network design;
• Center of gravity models;
• Facility location by distance-based approaches;
• Alternative service levels;
• Capacity constraints;
• Outbound transportation;
• Fixed and variable costs;
• Redesign of existing networks;
• Multi-echelon networks;
• Networks with multiple products and multiple production sites;
• Data-aggregation in supply chain networks design.
