Doel vakThe goal of this course is to develop some essential practical skills
that characterize a good public policy economist, namely being able to
apply economic reasoning to societal problems and to develop and present
ideas on improving and designing public policies. To this end the course
focuses on the role of economists in designing public policies and on
the decision making process in practice.
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to :
- identify the economic dimension of relevant societal issues
- apply economic reasoning to societal problems
- identify the relevant contributions in the academic literature
- translate contributions from the academic literature to useful policy
- take a critical attitude towards the scientific literature
- write a clear policy advice
- present their findings to both expert and non-expert academic
- work independently
Inhoud vakIn this course students write a policy brief in which they present an
economic analysis of a topical societal problem and provide a policy
advice. Students first choose a societal problem, identify the relevant
economic literature and write a (short) literature review. On the basis
of their literature review students write a policy brief. Furthermore,
students actively participate in policy seminars in which policy makers
talk about the role of the economist in the design of public policies
and on how policy decisions are made in practice. Finally, students
present their policy brief to fellow students and School in a conference
