Inhoud vak

Banks play a key role in the modern society and have come to dominate
financial markets. However, their reach is not universal and their
dominance not unchallenged. The story of microfinance shows that
traditional banking business models are inadequate when lending to the
poor. More recently, the advent of the FinTech industry has hit at the
core business of large banks through its disruptive combination of
online platforms, big data and crowdfunding. These forces combined with
increased scrutiny and regulation have led to the birth of the shadow
banking system, where traditional bank functions are now performed by
new types of intermediary. This course will build upon the content of
the Bachelor course Financial Markets and Institutions with a focus on
the rapidly changing modern banking industry. You will understand the
limitations of the traditional banking model and how alternative lending
practices and new technologies are reshaping financial markets. Using
the quantitative tools learned in previous course the you will analyze
the credit risk of peer-to-peer loans.
