Quantitative Research Methods

Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.

Doel vak

After successfully completing this course you have shown that you are
capable of:
o Describing and explaining the most important quantitative research
o Performing essential steps in a quantitative research cycle: develop
hypotheses, translate concepts into measurable survey items, and analyse
survey data to test the psychometric quality of items and test
o Writing an academic report based on a quantitative study.

Inhoud vak

Quantitative research methods refer to the systematic empirical
investigation of social phenomena via statistical, mathematical, or
computational techniques. The objective of quantitative research is to
determine the relationship between constructs (e.g., commitment and
performance) that are of interest to the researcher. This course is
meant to familiarize you with the research process starting from a
research question to collecting data, analysing data, and writing a
scientific research paper. The goal of the course is to help you prepare
for your academic paper and for your Master’s thesis and to help you
understand and critically evaluate the scientific articles that you read
while studying or while looking for state-of-the art information about
topics you encounter in your (working) life.

During the lectures, we will discuss the main concepts and apply them to
real examples. Some lectures will deal with SPSS examples.

In each tutorial session, we practice the skills that are central to the
theme of the current week. We also apply the concepts to the team
research projects.

Team assignment
To actually practice the skills of quantitative research, you will work
on a team assignment (i.e., a team research project). The lectures and
tutorials are designed in such a way that they can help you successfully
complete the assignment.

The exam consists of open-ended questions, which test knowledge,
insight, and application, and covers all book chapters, lectures, and
tutorials. The final exam counts for 50% of the total grade.

Team assignment
The other 50% of the total grade is based on your team assignment.

To pass the course, you need a minimum total grade of 5.5. In addition,
you must reach at least a 5.0 for each of the grade components (i.e.,
exam and team assignment).
