Doel vak
1. The student is able to outline and clarify James McClendon’s ethicsand its close attachment to narrative and biographical theology, such as
the lives and legacies of Dag Hammarskjöld, Martin Luther King, Sarah
Edwards-Pierpont, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Dorothy Day.
2. The student shows insight in making McClendon’s theology conversant
with contemporary theologians, the spiritual climate in which he was
working, and the onset of the 21st century.
3. The student knows how to ‘translate’ the fruit of this study to the
working floor of the evangelical tradition and Baptist life & tradition.
Inhoud vak
This course prepares students for reading, studying and understandingMcClendon’s theology. It discusses his methodology, his core concepts,
and his approaches of lived faith.
In discussion students reflect on the relevance of McClendon’s theology
for ‘being Church today’. Students are also expected to take part in a
local church, to be participant observers themselves, and to be able to
apply theological insights within living ecclesial practices.
Onderwijsvorm
Attendance of classes is required, just like preparation of theassignments. The student prepares for classes by critical reading of the
designated chapters and articles. During classes the subject matter will
be discussed and deepened.
Justification of hours:
6 ects (= 168 hours). Classes and (preparing for) exam take
approximately 40 hours. 128 hours remain for reading (1) McClendons ST
1, (2) McClendons Biography as Theology, and Ryan Andrew Newson, Andrew
C. Wright (eds.), The Collected Works of James Wm. McClendon, Vol. 2 ,
see the list below (altogether: 335 + 184 + 130 = 649 pages [= 6 pages
per hour]).
