Advanced Digital Archaeology

Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.

Doel vak

This course offers an in-depth overview of the position, development and
application of the most relevant digital methods in (landscape)
archaeology. The course is structured around practicals that are
designed to develop archaeological data management and analysis skills
to solve specific research questions, using
- GIS and remote sensing tools
- descriptive statistics, sampling methods and hypothesis testing
- basic multivariate statistics
- basic simulation modelling tools

The practicals will be centered on questions of site location analysis,
detection of archaeological and landscape features, discovering patterns
in (landscape) archaeological datasets and making predictions and
estimations from archaeological samples.

A laptop is required for this course, preferably running the Windows
operating system. All necessary software will be made available to the
students during the course.

Inhoud vak

1. Acquiring advanced knowledge of digital methods and techniques used
to collect and analyse (landscape) archaeological data and to answer
(landscape) archaeological research questions.
2. Acquiring insight in the position of digital methods and techniques
in (landscape) archaeology, and acquiring knowledge about current
developments in digital approaches in the discipline.
3. Acquiring practical skills in applying a number of specific digital
methods and techniques, focusing on data management, analysis and
visualisation (in particular statistics, GIS and remote sensing, and
simulation modelling).

Combined lectures and practicals, 2 x 3 hrs per week.

For each practical, a graded assignment needs to be completed. Each of
these assignments is weighed equally for the final grade.
