Doel vak

To gain insight in the reading process, the development of reading
skills, and factors that affect this development.

Inhoud vak

People read for enjoyment, but also because they have to participate
effectively in a society in which written communication plays an
essential role. In school, students read both literary texts and texts
that allow them to learn content knowledge. Not every student is a
competent, motivated reader. In this course, we examine how reading
skills develop during the course of children’s and adolescents’ lives,
to what extent this development is affected by personal characteristics
such as motivation and which role families and schools play. Themes that
are discussed are: emergent literacy, reading motivation, reading
comprehension and ICT.

Onderwijsvorm

There are two meetings per week. The first meeting consists of a
theoretical part (in the form of interactive lectures) and a part called
‘reading promotion in practice’, in which presentations and field trips
give insight into how different organizations in the field, by means of
various programs and projects, encourage students in primary and
secondary education to read more often. This meeting lasts for three
hours: during the first two hours theory is discussed and the final hour
is spent on the practical part. The second meeting (two hours) is a
seminar in which groups of students give presentations in which they
apply the theoretical knowledge they learnt in the previous week to a
concrete reading program/project. During this meeting students are
provided with peer and tutor feedback.

Toetsvorm

Assessment consists of two parts. The first part is a written exam (open
questions; 70%). The second part is an assessment of the presentations
students give during the seminars (30%). Both parts must be graded at
least 5.5.
