Doel vak
Course objectives are:1. Get to know major developments of contemporary art from the 1960s to
today, as well as related theoretical positions.
2. Understand the position of these developments in relation to the
general development of the visual arts, as well as to broader notions
such as postmodernism and contemporaneity
2. Understand the specific challenges and requirements of analyzing
contemporary art
3. Train your abilities to understand and critically assess academic
texts, both theoretical and historical.
4. Train your abilities to choose an individual research topic and to
conduct research identifying and synthesizing the relevant literature,
and conducting close readings of artworks or -projects.
Inhoud vak
This class focuses on the history and theory of contemporary art fromthe 1960s to today. It is dedicated to the exploration and discussion of
key developments of contemporary art, such as Minimal Art, Conceptual
Art, Performance Art, Participatory Art, Installation Art, Video Art and
Digital Art. The increasingly global nature of contemporary art will
also be addressed. While a major part of the class consists of lectures
and seminars dedicated to the discussion of key literature, students
will also choose an individual research topic (an artwork, art project,
or series of work) to train their individual research skills.

Participation: preparation of in-class text discussions (questions ordiscussion points via Canvas, one day before class), and participation
in these discussions are graded (15%, Learning objectives 1,2,3).
Presentations: Final presentations are graded (15%, learning objectives
2, 3, 4).
Final paper: Graded (70%, Learning objectives 1, 2, 3, 4). Students must
pass the final paper to pass the course.
