Doel vak

After completing this course
• The student is able to apply the most important social scientific
theories with regard to cultural interaction, acculturation and
• The student recognizes the problems related to the periodization of
history and is acquainted with the most important discussions about the
relation between culture, identity and power;
• The student is acquainted with the most important viewpoints in
general (cultural-historical) discussions about East/West, Hellenism and
• The student gains awareness of conflicting opinions in Anglophone
scholarship and learns to position him/herself in debates.

Inhoud vak

This module is concerned with the interaction between the cultures of
the Mediterranean and the Middle East, focusing in particular on the
perpetual confrontations, but also intense streams and contacts between
East and West from a cultural-historical, anthropological and
contemporary theoretical perspective. These and other themes will be
treated broadly, from various sources and media, and evidently from an
interdisciplinary angle. Important aspects are the reciprocity of
cultural contact and the possibly to analyze contacts and confrontations
from various perspectives (for instance the Greeks on the Persians, but
also the Persians on the Greeks).


One lecture and one tutorial per week, both lasting three hours.

Vereiste voorkennis

For this course knowledge of ancient history is required. Students must
have taken the course A Cultural History of the Ancient World 1: The
Near East and the Greek world or other relevant courses relating to
Ancient History.
