Doel vak
1. Students will become familiar with the current scholarly literatureabout Dutch design and national identity.
2. Students demonstrate the ability to analyse and interpret design
orally and in writing.
3. Students conduct original research utilizing artefacts and other
primary sources related to material culture and will situate their
research within the context of the scholarship related to Dutch design
and national identity.
4. Students develop and support an argument and demonstrate clear
analytical writing skills through the preparation of an essay that uses
original primary sources.
Inhoud vak
The aim of this course is to analyze the construction of Dutch Designand to develop alternative approaches to the study of material culture
in the Netherlands. The students get an insight in the creation and
development of Dutch design and of 'Dutchness' as a constructed concept,
mediated by designers, labels, design critics, institutions and
promotion campaigns.

Attendance is required. The evaluation will be based on three blogentries (compulsory), an oral presentation (20%), a final presentation
(compulsory) and an essay (80%). To pass the course, the essay needs to
be a 6.0 or higher.
In order to qualify for a grade, students need to fulfill all in-class
assignments, as well as submitting their research essay. Please note
that the oral presentations are non ‘re-sitable’. The re-sit grade will
be 100% based on the (reworked) research essay. This means that partial
grades will not count when calculating final grades resulting from the
re-sit. Moreover, the maximum grade for a re-sit essay is 8.
