From Empire to Brexit: British Literature 1900-present

Doel vak

Students become acquainted with the major developments and a number of
key texts in British literature from 1900 to the present, with a
particular focus on how literature can be seen as reflecting historical
developments in terms of literary styles and themes.

Inhoud vak

This course tracks the history of British literature chronologically,
from the First World War and the height of the British Empire to the
multicultural voices from contemporary Britain. It seeks to understand
how authors reflect on the trials and tribulations of the twentieth
century, when Britain stops being a daunting world power with colonies
around the globe and needs to adjust to a more humble role. We examine
relevant cultural and literary contexts, including modernism,
postmodernism, and postcolonialism against their respective historical


Period 5 and 6: seminar meetings, 2 x 2 hours per week.


Final essay (60%), presentation (30%), and participation (10%). In order
to pass the course, students must receive a 5.0 or higher on the final
essay. The weighted average of all components must be 5.5 or higher.
There is one resit possibility for the final essay.

Vereiste voorkennis

Students must have taken part in the modules “Literature, Culture, and
Society” and “Genre and Literary Analysis.”

The level of English in this course is high. This is a discussion-based
course, so attendance is compulsory. If you are absent at more than 20%
of the course meetings, you cannot pass the course. Exceptions may be
made in grave personal circumstances. Make sure to inform both your
lecturer and the academic advisor in such cases.

Afwijkende intekenprocedure

There is a slightly different enrollment procedure for this module. The standard procedure of the Faculty of Humanities has students sign up for (i) the module, (ii) the preferred seminar group, and (iii) the exam. However, for this module the instructor will assign the students to the seminar groups. Therefore, students should sign up for (i) the module and (iii) the exam, but not for (ii) the seminar groups.
