Creative Writing and the Publishing Industry

Doel vak

The second course in creative writing underscores the skills learned in
the introduction to creative writing and offers students a chance to
explore the ins and outs of the publishing industry in a practical
manner. The objectives of this course are (1) to produce an editorial
report and proposal on a piece of creative writing and (2) to learn how
effectively critique work as an editor and copyeditor. The course thus
not only further
trains students in writing, but teaches them about how the various
publishing industries of today operate, which can be useful for aspiring
writers and for employment at book, journal, or magazine publishing

Inhoud vak

The course teaches students about the publishing industry from proposal
to contract to editing and copyediting.


Seminars 4 hours per week.


Editorial Report: 30%
Copyediting: 10%
Sales Pitch: 40%
Final Written Assignment: 20%
Students must score a 5.5 overall in order to pass the course.

Vereiste voorkennis

Students must have taken part in the modules “Genre and Literary
Analysis” and “Creative Writing”.

Participation by students from outside of this program is not possible.

Overige informatie

Attendance is compulsory. If you are absent at more than 20% of
the course meetings, you cannot pass the course. Exceptions may be made
in grave personal circumstances. Make sure to inform both your lecturer
and the academic advisor in such cases.

Afwijkende intekenprocedure

There is a slightly different enrollment procedure for this module. The standard procedure of the Faculty of Humanities has students sign up for (i) the module, (ii) the form of tuition (lecture and/or preferred seminar group), and (iii) the exam. However, for this module the instructor will assign the students to the seminar groups. Therefore, students should sign up for (i) the module and (iii) the exam, but not for (ii) the seminar groups.
