Doel vak

• Knowledge of different language policies in a variety of settings and
the relevant factors for each setting;
• Insight into factors playing a role in deciding on a language policy;
• Awareness of political and social factors relevant for language
policies.

Inhoud vak

When more than one language is in use in an organization, this
organization needs a language policy: official rules and regulations
about the use of language(s) within that organization. In this course,
we will consider the issue of language policy in a range of settings:
how do organizations deal with multiple languages being in use in their
organization? How do the policies work in practice? We will look at
businesses, NGOs, education and law, which we examine by looking at case
studies from countries all around the world. In all these case studies,
we’ll consider factors such as majority vs minority languages, political
decisions, social aspects.

Onderwijsvorm

Four sessions of three hours in weeks 1-3. After an introductory class
in which we discuss the general issues surrounding language policy, we
will focus on one setting in each subsequent session, focusing on
several case studies that represent the issues for this particular
setting (NGO, education etc.)
