English Text Editing MA

2019-2020
Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.

Doel vak

The aim of this course is to provide students with a deeper insight into
the factors that need to be considered when editing English texts,
particularly those written by authors for whom English is not a first
language. It is also an opportunity for students to critically assess
and develop their own writing skills and gain new insights into complex
issues of grammar, syntax, punctuation, textual cohesion, etc.
On a theoretical level, the course will discuss ethical issues
concerning editor’s face (e.g. questions of authorship, “how far is too
far?”) and examine the relationship between author, editor and reader.
On a practical level, the course aims to improve and build specific
editing skills and train students to efficiently spot errors and
re-formulate sentences in a logical and accurate manner.

Inhoud vak

• The course will begin with a diagnostic exercise and each session will
include specific themes, relevant exercises and homework assignments.
• The first few weeks are devoted to “category 1” editing (i.e.
spotting, explaining and correcting the most frequent errors relating to
spelling, punctuation, lexical choice, lexical grammar and clause
grammar).
• The last few weeks focus on “category 2” editing, which involves
message management (i.e. making written texts more effective for a
specific target audience).
• The course will also include (a) discussion of ethical issues in
editing work, particularly in an academic context, and (b) consideration
of the editor’s role as a gatekeeper and language advisor in a world

• The course is worth 6 EC, which comes down to 168 hours of work.
