In this course we will focus on second language learning, addressing
differences between first, second and foreign language acquisition in
the context of The Netherlands. Regarding language acquisition, we will
discuss different trends in language learning and didactic approaches.
Regarding the case of The Netherlands, we will examine to what extent
English is becoming a second language for Dutch native speakers,
exploring issues such as domains of use of English, language and
identity, and language attitudes. Case studies that we will discuss
include the place of English in The Netherlands in Kachru’s (1985) Three
Circles Model and Schneider's Dynamic Model (2003), bilingual education
(TTO/CLIL) and English in Dutch primary schools.
