Key Works in Contemporary Historical Thought

Doel vak

The aim of the course is to acquire an overview of contemporary
historical thought. Students are able to analyse and evaluate historical
works in relation to their historiographical context, and present their
views about it in class.

Inhoud vak

This course is about contemporary history writing. We examine theories,
methods, practices, and concepts that historians and social scientists
use to explain and write about the past. We will discuss key works by
authors such as Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie, Carlo ginzburg, Michel de
Certeau, Joan Scott, and Dipesh Chakrabarty. In class students will
present their thoughts on a key historical work in the field of their
master-specialization. Additionally we will discuss Lynn Hunt's, Writing
History in the Global Era (2014) and Jo Guldi and David Armitage's, The
History Manifesto (2014).


Lectures and seminars.


Written Open Book Exam (75%), oral presentation and participation at the
seminars (25%).
