Doel vak

In this course you will learn about social processes in teams and the
dynamics of organizational change. After taking this course you will be
able to:
- recognize and systematically describe characteristics of teams and how
teams evolve across their life cycle.
- understand how teams interact, exchange information, manage diversity
and conflict, reach decisions, and adapt to change, and understand how
that affects team outcomes.
- reflect on your own team working skills and work more effectively in a
- apply a team diagnostic tool a develop recommendations on how to lead
teams across time and under changing circumstances.

Inhoud vak

Organizations increasingly make use of teams to accomplish important
tasks. In this course we first explore the nature and characteristics of
teams in organizations, including team members’ functional roles and the
distribution and use of leadership and authority. We then move on to
specific research topics in the area of social processes and change
dynamics in organizations as well as the research methods used to study
them. Topics include for example information sharing, decision making,
diversity management, conflict resolution, and managing and adapting to
change. Practical methods for team development will also be discussed
and applied in a team project. Students will form teams at the beginning
of the course and work on several team assignments throughout the


Lectures, case studies, team development exercises in class, and team


Students are expected to actively participate in group discussions as
well as several small team assignment throughout the course. Teams will
also complete a small field study and present their results in class.
Attendance during the team presentations is strictly mandatory. Finally,
there will be a written exam (multiple choice and open questions).
Students need to pass both the teamwork (small assignments and
presentation) and the exam in order to obtain credits for this class.
Partial grades are only valid during the study year in which the grade
has been achieved.


Scientific papers concerning current research topics will be announced
in class.

Mandatory registration for a group project via the Canvas course site prior to the first lecture. Students who do not enroll in a group will not be able to pass this course. More information will follow on Canvas.

Aanbevolen voorkennis

Students are strongly encouraged to review their knowledge about social
psychology theories and group processes prior to the course.
