Juridisch Engels

Dit vak wordt in het Engels aangeboden. Omschrijvingen kunnen daardoor mogelijk alleen in het Engels worden weergegeven.

Doel vak

Legal English is the lingua franca of International business. In
addition, globalization and the steady dissolution of national
boundaries has increased pressure on even purely national based law
firms and enterprises to be able to translate and transcribe complex
jargon into another language (difficult) via another legal system (very
difficult). Reliance on dictionaries is often inadequate and sometimes
dangerously misleading. The internet translation machinery is too basic
for the task as yet. This course teaches law students how to help
themselves learn legal English by placing the vocabulary in the correct
context - the English legal system - and by comparing and contrasting
with their own legal system. At the end of the course the student is
enabled with an appreciation of the Common law legal method an
operative model to use to communicate and translate. Moreover, by
adopting the common law mindset through practical exercises and case
study, the student is offered a unique chance to not only speak with
common law terms but to think, to some extent, in a common law way
which is a fantastic advantage in international engagement on any level.
University education in the truest sense of the word.
