Doel vakThe aim of this course is to familiarize students with different forms
of transnational organized crime that occur in the context of conflict
and to understand and explain their occurrence and relation to conflict.
Upon completion of the course, the student:
- understands the characteristics and definitions of different types of
transnational organized crime;
- is aware of definitional debates around the transnational crimes
- is aware of and has knowledge about responses to transnational crimes
and the relevant legal actors in that context;
- can apply theoretical concepts to conflict situations in order to
analyse the occurrence of transnational crimes;
- can think critically about policy responses in this area.
Inhoud vakThis course focuses on the interrelation between conflict and
transnational organized crime. How do wars or uprisings create,
facilitate and proliferate transnational organized crime? What are the
links between organized crime and conflict? During the course,
practitioners and researchers from other universities will be invited to
give guest lectures about a specific type of transnational crime and
link it to conflict. Topics may change per year, but expect topics such
as conflict-related types of: human trafficking/ human smuggling,
illegal extraction of natural resources (mining, oil, logging, wildlife
crimes), illegal trade in arts and artefacts, illegal weapons trade,
fraud, environmental crimes or piracy.
OnderwijsvormThe course will consist of a combination of lectures and workshops. In
each lecture, a guest lecturer will zoom in on a specific type of
transnational crime, firstly by discussing definitions of, and responses
to, that type of crime; and secondly by looking into examples of
occurrences of the type of transnational crime in conflicts.
In addition, there will be three workshops in which students, in an
interactive manner, will study a given conflict and look more closely
into the occurrence of transnational crime in that conflict.
The program consists of one lecture every week (7 in total) and one
workshop every other week (3 in total).
ToetsvormThe course is evaluated with written assignments in preparation for the
tutorials, and a final written assignment in the form of a research
LiteratuurThe course will use a collection of academic articles and book chapters
on transnational crime in conflict situations.
DoelgroepApart from students in criminology, the course is also open to a limited
number of students from other universities/faculties, exchange students,
contractor students (students who pay for one course).
Courses from a master at the faculty can only be taken as a secondary
course if you have a diploma that gives access to the relevant master/
specialization and if you are enrolled in a master.
