Inhoud vak

For a research field such as communication science to have a genuine
impact on society, it needs to fulfill a number of basic requirements.
First, it needs good, tried and tested theories that help its users to
better understand societal phenomena. Second, it needs people who can
evaluate and apply these theories when they are looking for solutions
for professional and/or societal problems.
The goal of Science for Impact 1 is to increase the impact you can have
as a communication professional, by teaching you (1) to differentiate
between reasonably good, good, and better communication science, and (2)
to apply this knowledge to better understand and solve professional and
societal problems.
In the course, plenary classes enabling you to critically assess
scientific work and its conclusions, and work groups focusing on
applying scientific knowledge to real world phenomena, will alternate.
Next to (graded as well as ungraded) individual assignments, you will
work with a group on a proposal for a scientific study that will benefit
a societal stakeholder. In Science for Impact 2 (the follow-up course),
you will carry out this proposal.
